DAY-BY-DAY PROGRAM

The route, step by step

Each of the 4 days combines route, history and rest. This is the complete program, step by step.

1. DAY 1

   Cusco – Cock-of-the-rock – Bambú Lodge

   We depart early at 5:30 am on a 10-hour journey with guided stops from Cusco, climbing to the highest point at 4,000 m. Along the way we make stops such as the Ninamarca Chullpas, a pre-Inca cemetery. Then we descend to the inter-Andean valleys to the town of Paucartambo, the folkloric capital of Peru, at 2,950 m. After visiting this beautiful town we head to Acjanaco at 3,560 m, the entrance point to the Manu National Park (UNESCO), and descend to the Cloud Forest, where we hike to observe orchids, quetzals, toucans and multicolored tanagers. In San Pedro, a strategic site to observe Peru's national bird, the Andean cock-of-the-rock, we visit the lek where these birds perform their mating ritual. With luck we will see the first mammal species such as monkeys and the spectacled bear. We continue to our Bambú Lodge.

2. DAY 2

   Bambú Lodge – Soga de Oro Lodge

   Early in the morning, after breakfast, we continue the journey by bus to the town of Atalaya, observing flora and fauna along the way. In Atalaya we board our motorized boat and sail on the Alto Madre de Dios River for 30 minutes to the Soga de Oro Lodge. We hike along a circuit of jungle trails in search of animals such as monkeys, birds and peccaries. After lunch we visit a small oxbow lake called Machuwasi, exploring it on traditional Amazonian rafts and along the trails around it: we can observe the prehistoric bird called hoatzin, capybaras and, with luck, caimans. We spend the night at Soga de Oro Lodge. Optional night walk (arachnids, insects, frogs, snakes).

3. DAY 3

   Soga de Oro Lodge – Macaw clay lick

   We leave very early by boat (40 minutes) to the parrot clay lick, a clay wall where these birds gather to eat the clay minerals and detoxify. Here we can appreciate the activity of parrots and macaws of up to 6 species, using our binoculars and telescopes. After breakfast we explore the trails in search of monkeys and birds and visit the giant tree known as ceiba pentandra, while the guide explains ethnobotany (medicinal plants). After lunch we can fish or swim in the river. The night is spent at Soga de Oro Lodge, with an optional night walk.

4. DAY 4

   Soga de Oro Lodge – Cusco

   After breakfast we board the boat back to Atalaya, where our bus is waiting. For flora lovers, we can visit the local botanical garden, which houses approximately 200 species of orchids. We continue the journey back to Cusco with stops in the Cloud Forest in case we find animals or birds not seen on the first day. We arrive around 5 in the afternoon and are transferred to the hotel. End of our services.
