DAY-BY-DAY PROGRAM
The route, step by step
Each of the 3 days combines route, history and rest. This is the complete program, step by step.
-
DAY 1
Puerto Maldonado – River – Lodge – Nocturnal Caiman Safari
Pickup at the airport or terminal of Puerto Maldonado and transfer to the port on the Madre de Dios River. We sail 30–45 minutes in a covered motorized canoe: along the way, herons, kingfishers, turtles lined up on logs and capybaras on the banks. Arrival at the lodge, welcome with Amazonian fruit and lunch. In the afternoon, first reconnaissance walk through the forest or ascent to the canopy tower at dusk, when toucans and macaws return to their roosts. After dinner, nocturnal caiman safari by boat: we tour the shores with a flashlight looking for the red glow of the eyes of the white and black caimans. Night at the lodge with mosquito nets.
-
DAY 2
Sandoval Lake – Primary Forest – Night Walk
Departure at dawn by boat on the Madre de Dios to the Tambopata National Reserve checkpoint; from there, a 3-km trail (~1 hour, rubber boots included) to the heart of the aguajal, where a wooden canoe awaits us to cross to the open mirror of Sandoval Lake. We row in silence among 30-meter aguaje palms: it is the territory of an endangered giant otter family, of black caimans up to 4 meters, hoatzins, toucans, macaws and howler monkeys. Lunch at the lodge and rest during the hottest hours. In the afternoon, a walk through the primary forest: centennial shihuahuacos, giant lupunas and strangler figs. At night, a flashlight walk: frogs of all sizes, tarantulas and whip scorpions. Dinner and second night at the lodge.
-
DAY 3
Dawn – Return to Puerto Maldonado
Wake up to the chorus of howler monkeys. Short walk at dawn or birdwatching from the lodge —the first hour of light is the most active in the jungle— and breakfast. Return sailing the Madre de Dios to Puerto Maldonado with the last photos of the river. Transfer to the airport or bus terminal, coordinated at least 2 hours before the flight. End of our services.
