Things to Do in Lima in 1 or 2 Days before you fly to Cusco

A 1- or 2-day plan for Lima: historic center, Miraflores, Barranco and food, before your flight to Cusco.

Things to do in Lima if you have one or two days: tour the historic center in the morning, stroll the Miraflores boardwalk in the afternoon and have dinner in Barranco. With two days, add a museum and a huaca. Lima sits at sea level, so it is also a good starting point before you climb to Cusco.

What are the best things to do in Lima if you only have one day?

With one full day, split the city into two zones. First head to the historic center, which packs plazas, churches and colonial mansions into a small area. Then cross over to Miraflores, where the cliffs and the ocean are. That way you see the essentials without losing hours in traffic.

  • Morning: Plaza Mayor, the cathedral and the streets of the center.
  • Lunch: a Peruvian restaurant in Miraflores or Barranco.
  • Afternoon: the boardwalk, Love Park and sunset over the Pacific.

Lima also has heavy traffic at rush hour. For that reason it pays to get around by ride-hailing taxi or on a guided tour, rather than rely on public transport.

What should you see in the historic center of Lima?

UNESCO declared the historic center a World Heritage Site. You can cover it on foot, because the sights sit very close together. Start at the Plaza Mayor, home to the cathedral and the Government Palace.

Next, you can visit the San Francisco convent, famous for its library and catacombs. Meanwhile, the wooden balconies of the colonial mansions give the nearby streets their character. However, keep an eye on your belongings and avoid empty streets at night.

If you prefer a guide, our Lima City Tour Full Day starts from $45 and covers the main areas in one day.

What is there to do in Miraflores and Barranco?

Miraflores is the easiest area for visitors, with hotels, restaurants and a long boardwalk above the cliffs. First walk through Love Park. Then continue to the viewpoints and watch paragliders float over the sea.

Barranco is a few minutes away and is Lima’s bohemian neighborhood. It has colorful houses, galleries, bars and the Bridge of Sighs. At night it also offers good live music. So book your dinner there.

What can you do in Lima in 2 days?

With two days you can slow down. Spend the first on the center and Miraflores, as in the plan above. Then save the second day for a museum and for food.

Time of day Day 1 Day 2
Morning Historic center Pre-Hispanic art museum
Afternoon Miraflores and boardwalk Huaca Pucllana or Barranco
Evening Dinner in Barranco Water show or a quiet dinner

For example, Miraflores holds Huaca Pucllana, a pre-Inca adobe pyramid right in the neighborhood. Lima also has excellent museums on the cultures of ancient Peru. That is why a second day is worth it if you enjoy history.

When is the best time to visit Lima?

From December to April it is sunnier and warmer, ideal for the beach and the boardwalk. From May to November, in contrast, the sky is usually covered by a mist that locals call garúa. Even so, you can visit the city all year.

The mist does not stop you from touring museums, churches or restaurants. So a gray day will not ruin your plans. Pack a light jacket, and save the sunset photos for clear days.

Where can you try Lima’s food?

Lima is the country’s food capital. Try ceviche, lomo saltado, ají de gallina and anticuchos. You will find everything from simple markets to fine dining. However, book ahead if you want to eat at a famous place.

Also, order ceviche at midday, since that is when the fish is freshest. Then leave dinner for hot dishes.

How do you combine Lima with a route to Cusco?

Lima fits well at the start of a trip through the south. You are at sea level, so your body can rest before it climbs to altitude. If you then fly to Cusco, at 3,400 m, read our guide to altitude in Cusco and how to acclimatize.

To plan the whole trip, there is the Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu 6 Days and 5 Nights package, from $890. And if you are still choosing your route, see the guide to places to visit in Peru.

In addition, if you have a spare afternoon, ask about a day trip down the south coast. Official destination information is available on the PromPerú page on Lima.

How do you get around Lima without wasting time?

The city is large and traffic is slow. For that reason, group your visits by area and do not cross town several times a day. The ride between the center and Miraflores can also take more than half an hour at rush hour. So set out early and head back before six in the evening.
