The route, step by step

This is how the day unfolds, hour by hour, with everything you'll do and where.

  1. DAY 1

    Arequipa – Pillones Waterfall

    At 06:00–06:30 we pick you up from your hotel and head to the waterfall (approx. 2 hours of travel). We make the first stop at the Carlitos viewpoint to see the three volcanoes of the city: Misti, Chachani and Pichu Pichu; then we continue through the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve to observe South American camelids, mainly vicuñas. At 10:30 we arrive at the starting point of the hike to Pillones: we descend about 30 minutes along the river (it is quite cold at 4,000 m) to the waterfall, where we spend about 45 minutes among falls and rock formations. After lunch, at 13:40 we tour the Imata stone forest for about 45 minutes. At 15:00 we begin the return, arriving at the center of Arequipa around 17:00.

How demanding is the tour?

It is moderate difficulty: you descend about 30 minutes on a trail along the river to reach the waterfall. The return is uphill, so good physical condition is recommended.

Is it very cold?

Yes: the area is at over 4,000 m. Bring warm clothes, a hat, gloves and sunscreen, because the highland sun burns even in the cold.

What is the best time to do it?

It can be done all year round. The dry season (April–November) is the most recommended; between December and March it rains more.

What animals can I see?

In the Salinas and Aguada Blanca Reserve it is common to see vicuñas, alpacas and llamas, and high-Andean birds such as flamingos depending on the season.

What does the price include?

It includes tourist transportation, professional guide and entrance to the waterfall. It does not include lunch or tips.
