Huacachina: Sandboarding and Dune Buggies what to expect on the dunes

All about Huacachina sandboarding and dune buggy rides: how long they last, the best time, safety and what to bring.

Huacachina sandboarding takes place at an oasis ringed by dunes, about 5 km from the city of Ica. Alongside it you can ride a dune buggy, a sand vehicle with a safety cage. A trip lasts one to two hours. That makes it a good fit for a day on the south coast, especially at sunset.

What is Huacachina, and where is it?

Huacachina is a small village with a natural lagoon, palm trees and hotels, in the middle of the Ica desert. It sits about 300 km south of Lima on the Pan-American Highway. So the trip by bus or car takes several hours, depending on traffic.

The lagoon is also the heart of the village. Restaurants, viewpoints and terraces surround it. However, the real attraction lies behind them: the dunes, which rise dozens of meters above the oasis.

What is a dune buggy ride like?

The buggy is an open vehicle with seats for several people and a frame of metal tubes. The driver climbs and drops over the dunes at a good speed. First you feel the pull of the climb, and then the drop, which makes your stomach flip.

On the other hand, the ride includes stops for photos and for sandboarding. Most tours run a circuit of an hour and a half to two hours. Many trips also end with the sun setting over the desert.

  • Always buckle your seat belt and keep your hands inside the vehicle.
  • Choose a middle seat if you dislike the feeling of open space.
  • Tell the driver if you get motion sickness easily.

How does sandboarding work in Huacachina?

You ride a board much like a snowboard. At first, almost everyone slides lying down on their stomach, because it is steadier and easier. Later, if you feel brave, you can try standing on the gentler dunes.

You need no previous experience. However, sand gets everywhere. So bring sunglasses, comfortable clothes and a scarf for your mouth. Also avoid open shoes, because sand slips in and burns at midday.

For example, if you travel with small children, ask about the minimum age first. Some companies set height or weight limits.

When is the best time to go to Huacachina?

The best time is the afternoon, when the heat eases and the golden light brings out the shapes in the sand. At midday, in contrast, the sun is fierce and the sand heats up. Summer in the southern hemisphere, from December to March, is hotter. From May to September the nights are cool, although the days stay sunny.

So if you only have one afternoon, arrive in Huacachina in mid-afternoon. First take the buggy ride, and then wait for the sunset from a viewpoint.

How do you get to Huacachina from Lima?

Direct buses run from Lima to Ica, and a short taxi ride takes you from the city to the oasis. However, the whole trip takes four to five hours. That is why many people leave early and arrive in time for lunch.

You can also go by private car or on a tour that includes the transfer. On the other hand, if you come from Paracas, the distance is much shorter and the drive takes a little over an hour. So combining both stops saves time on the road.

One day or one night in Ica?

Many travelers see Huacachina as a short stop. However, a night in Ica lets you pair the dunes with other plans in the area, such as a trip to Paracas. You also avoid driving the highway after dark.

Our Ica and Huacachina 2 Days and 1 Night trip starts from $109 and includes the transfer, buggy tickets, a sandboard instructor and one hotel night. If you would rather add the coast, the Paracas and Ballestas Islands 2 Days and 1 Night route costs from $129. This table compares the two options.

Route Duration From What the plan covers
Ica and Huacachina 2 days and 1 night $109 Oasis, dunes and Ica
Paracas and Ballestas Islands 2 days and 1 night $129 Coast, islands and reserve

So if you love dunes, start with the first. If you prefer marine wildlife, pick the second.

Is sandboarding and buggy riding safe?

It is a mild adventure activity, but it carries risks. Accidents happen mostly when drivers speed or vehicles are poorly maintained. For that reason, check three things before you climb in.

  • The vehicle has a tube cage and seat belts in good condition.
  • The driver explains the rules before you set off.
  • The company has a clear meeting point and contact.

If you have back or neck problems, say so before you book. In that case it may be better to simply watch the dunes from a viewpoint.

What should you bring to Huacachina?

  • Sunglasses and a hat with a chin strap.
  • Sunscreen and plenty of water.
  • Light clothes that can get sandy.
  • Closed shoes and socks.
  • A bag to protect your phone and camera.
